Access Group - Bristol Physical Access Chain

Bristol City Council is working to improve access for disabled people to buildings, parks and open spaces.

We now have an access standard to provide guidance on how to remove barriers to access, a fund for access improvements, and an access group to represent the views of disabled people - the Bristol Physical Access Chain.

The Bristol Physical Access Chain is an access group which is open to any disabled person who lives or works in Bristol and would like to be involved in consultation on improving access.

Why is it called a Chain?

The group is called a 'chain' because disabled people need the 'access chain' to be complete - they need to get out of their homes, to use transport, and for the place they are visiting to be accessible. If one part of the chain is inaccessible or incomplete then disabled people cannot make the journey or use the City Council service.

What does the group do?

The group meets regularly to discuss access improvement projects which are underway or being planned. Members of the group also visit Bristol City Council buildings, parks and streets to provide advice on which improvements are needed.

How does the group work?

The meetings are held during the day and refreshments are provided.
Personal assistants are available and information is available in different formats.
Out of pocket expenses such as transport are paid at the meeting.

What has the group done?

Since the group was set up in 1999, members have taken part in planning access improvements to many council buildings and sites, including:
