How does the forum work?

The Race Forum is made up of Members, staff and the council Race Advisors. Members represent the Black and minority ethnic communities in Bristol. The Race Advisors are the Forum's link with the Council.

How do the parts of the Forum work together?

Community members can participate by joining the Forum as members and/or feeding their views thorugh existing members and Advisors. Similalry Race Forum Advisors should be in good contact with a range of community members and groups to ensure they accurately represent community concerns.

Forum members help to represent the communities they form part of by attending Race Forum Open meetings to express their concerns and by talking with and writing to the Race Forum Advisors regarding issuess they consider important. Often a council officer will give a presentation at an Open Forum meeting regarding a change in services and this will give members a chance to ask questions and give their views on the likely implications to be taken into account. Members also elect the Race Forum Advisors.

Race Forum Advisors keep a check on the work of the Council through meetings with Councillors and Officers and by sitting on Commissions, Working Groups, and via consultations and reports. They lobby and campaign on race issues and consult with, report to, and brief the Forum Members on the direction and outcomes of their work.

The Forum Development Worker, Adminstrative Assistant and supporting Council Officer work with Forum Advisors and Members to support and advance the work of the Forum. They will help to organise meetings, training sessions and be a point of contact for groups wanting to consult with the forum on a particualr policy or isssue.

The Council consults with Race Advisors, asks for input and ideas and takes final decisions on council policy.
