Frequently Asked Questions, Myths ... and the Facts

Asylum seekers and refugees have been increasingly featured in the national and local news over the past decade. Despite increased media coverage there exists a huge information gap and much misinformation in circulation.

This document was produced by the Race Forum in 2004 in colaboration with members of the Bristol City Council Equalities and Community Cohesion team. It seeks to counter some of the myth and mis-information surrounding Asylum Seekers and Refugees by posing and aswering a series of questions that are often asked by people in the UK.

The booklet is presented under the following six headings:

• Why do people leave their own country to seek refuge and sanctuary?
• Are asylum seekers economic migrants in disguise?
• Are asylum seekers illegal immigrants?
• Do asylum seekers choose Britain because it is a 'soft touch'?
• Are asylum seekers bringing AIDS and TB to Britain?
• Are asylum seekers draining our public services and taking our jobs and houses?
